About The Workshop
We are exploring the relationship between power dynamics among different stakeholders
within the urban governance systems
in various Arab countries and how this can enhance
the participation process in the formation of public spaces
(considered as the primary and simplest components of cities, which can be linked to localities).
OUTCOMES
- Creating a network and fostering cooperation between TU Berlin and universities in partner countries, as well as local government authorities and civil society representatives in Tunisia, Lebanon, Sudan, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt
- Facilitating open channels of discussion and the exchange of experiences among higher education institutions, local government authorities, the private sector, and civil society stakeholders on topics related to local urban governance, participation, and urban space development.

OUTPUTS
- Expanding contacts between TU Berlin and partner universities, local government, and civil society in Tunisia, Jordan, and Egypt, and establishing new connections with partner universities, local government, and civil society in Sudan, Lebanon, and Iraq.
- Opening channels for discussion and knowledge exchange between partner institutions and civil society through contributions to workshops and symposia.

Berlin Activities 2023
Day 1
On Sunday 3th September, the workshop started with this cultural tour in Berlin, visiting the main sightseeing tour and going through the urban planning changes of the city over history.
Day 2
On Monday 4th September, it featured a tour organized by their partner Bezirksamt Berlin Mitte, with input from Ms. Seels from Bezirksamt Berlin Mitte and QM Moabit Ost at the Poststadion."potentials into case studies in the partner countries.
Day 3
On Tuesday 5th September, we had a session with our partner, TSPA, about different tools of urban analysis, including urban mapping. The groups worked on mapping challenges and potentials for case studies in the partner countries.
Day 4
On September 6, 2023, we visited BENN Marzahn-Süd and had insightful discussions with program coordinators and the local team. We learned about impactful community activities, took a tour highlighting initiatives like a cafe in a refugee shelter, and discovered 'Unbezahlbar,' a free shop promoting community bonds.
Day 5
On the final day of our Berlin workshop on September 7, 2023, at Stadtwerkstatt, we had a day filled with insightful discussions. Lukas Born from the German Senatsverwaltung discussed informal participation and legal aspects. We introduced participation guidelines and explored the significance of Liquid Democracy with Ms. Carolin Klingsporn. Dr. Olfa Ben Medien previewed the case study for our upcoming Tunis workshop.
